LESSON 2 OF 5

Give the README a clear job

A README should help a developer understand what the project does, whether it fits their situation, and where to begin.

For an illustrative webhook library, introduce the supported job, then show a small representative interaction. Distinguish a code sample that explains the API from the commands and configuration required to run it.

Use the README templates and editor to assemble your own verified instructions. Leave uncertain facts explicit while drafting; resolve them before publishing.

Browse the README and docs directory for patterns that suit your product type. A hosted platform and a local library may need different opening routes.

Today, review your README for purpose, intended user, prerequisites, installation, first example, expected result and support route. Choose the most consequential omission and prepare the information needed to fix it.

The README checker can help identify review candidates. Confirm them against the actual developer journey.
